Breastfeeding Basics

Breastfeeding Basics

Breastfeeding is liquid gold for your baby and it does a mother good, too! After delivery you have everything your baby needs through breastfeeding. The experience of breastfeeding is special for many reasons – the joyful bonding with your baby, the cost savings, and the health benefits for both mother and baby.

Bring your partner to learn about “the benefits” and art of breastfeeding, including where to begin and how to give yourself the best chance for success.

Participants are asked to bring two pillows and a doll or stuffed animal for demonstration.

Katie Martinson, RN, BSN, IBCLC, CCE

Katie earned her bachelor of arts in biology from Luther College and her bachelor of science in nursing from Loyola University. Katie then went on to work as a registered nurse in labor and delivery at Evanston Hospital, where she enjoyed assisting women with a variety of birthing preferences. While working in labor and delivery, Katie realized the impact breastfeeding education and support had on the quality of the breastfeeding experience of mothers and babies.

Having always been passionate about women’s health and supporting breastfeeding mothers, Katie became certified as a lactation consultant (IBCLC) and a certified childbirth instructor (CCE). She now teaches a childbirth education class at Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove, Ill., in addition to The Breastfeeding Experience class offered through the Prenatal University. Katie has four young daughters and enjoys camping, running, reading and spending time with her family. Katie and her family reside in the western suburbs of Chicago.
